8 People who Inspired Me to go for Data Science

career options after b tech

There is a famous quote which goes on to say

“Inspirations lead to Aspirations”.

This quote holds true for a large number of people. There are many stories of people who have achieved great success in their personal and professional life by following the footsteps of the people they idolize. They believe that these individuals achieved success in their lives because of their ways of functioning and behavior and the individual imitates the same. With the internet making the world a smaller place, many people share their success stories online and get a great deal of fan following.

Possessing and having an idol helps an individual to navigate through the tough times. People look up to their idols and then think of the problems they had thought were difficult were, in reality, very trivial in their nature. If individuals can solve the problems and deliver their solutions at a larger scale, then anybody can.

If people think that learning data science is tough or that the deep neural nets are not their cup of tea, then the following are the individuals who are looked up to as the role models who have created these. Following these role models offers the people with, motivation to find a bigger purpose of their life for a daily inspiration, as well as to achieve the same.

The following data science experts have been a source of inspiration and have guided millions of individuals from different parts of the world via their freely accessible tutorials, videos, blogs,  etc. These are the people who have invented the terms like ‘dark knowledge’, data scientist’,  and disclosed the mystery behind the deep learning as well as neural nets subjects.

Geoffrey Hinton

The term ‘Back Propagation’ is often heard in the field of data science. Geoffrey Hinton is considered to be the brain (co-inventor) behind the algorithm for training the neural nets and the deep learning simulations. Also, Geoffrey Hinton is the inventor of the term ‘Dark Knowledge’. It is inspired by the concept that all of the knowledge that exists is in the proportion of tiny probabilities which have almost no influence on the actual cost function that is used for training the test performance. Geoffrey Hinton is famously known for his contribution to the field of  Artificial Neural Networks. In 2013, he started working at Google and headed the  AI team. Geoffrey Hinton has a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Edinburgh. He along with his research group is the driving force for the resurgence of the neural networks and the deep learning.

Yann Lecun

Yann-LeCun is presently working with Facebook as the Director of the AI Research wing. Yann-LeCun is the founder director of the NYU Center for Data Science. Yann-LeCun has worked on many of the deep learning projects. He has 14 US patents registered against his name. He’s even associated with the New York University as a Professor for the past 12 years. Yann-LeCun has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI). He is interested in the areas like Deep Learning, Machine Learning, Computational Neuroscience and Computer Vision.

Alex “Sandy” Pentland

Since the last 29 years, Alex “Sandy” Pentland has been associated with the MIT, working in the capacity as a professor. During his tenure, he has co-founded many companies like IDcubed.org, Sense Networks, Ginger.io Cogito Health and many more. From among all of his achievements, he had been titled as the ‘World’s Most Powerful Data Scientist’ by the Forbes. Alex “Sandy” Pentland is even appointed as the advisor in many of the MNCs like Motorola, HBR, Nissan, Telefonica etc. The interest of Alex “Sandy” Pentland is in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, human computing etc.

Andrew Ng

Andrew NG is the co-founder of Coursera along with Daphne Koller. He is presently serving as a Chief Scientist in Baidu where he is involved in the task of carrying out researches in the areas of Deep Learning and in scalable approaches for Big Data as well as AI. In addition to this, he is even associated with the Stanford University, working as an Associate Professor. Andrew is even the Founder as well as the Lead of the Google’s Deep Learning Project. Via Coursera, along with the other disciplines, he has made the knowledge of data science accessible to everyone and that too for free! He is famously known for the Machine Learning Course he has developed.

Hilary Mason

Hilary Mason is the Founder of the Fast Forward Labs. She has also co-founded the hackNY.org and the DataGotham.  Earlier, she served as a Chief Scientist at the Bitly, and as an Assistant Professor at the Johnson & Wales University. Hilary Mason got featured in the famous list of the Fortune 40 under 40 people to watch out for in 2011. Along with a lot of other awards, Hilary Mason has been the recipient of the TechFellow Engineering Leadership Award in 2012.  Hilary Mason has her interests in the areas of Data Mining, Machine Learning, and Python.

Monica Rogati

Her passion is in converting the data into actionable insights, products, and meaningful stories. Monica Rogati’s interest areas are Statistical Text Mining, Machine Learning, Recommender Systems etc. She has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Carnegie Mellon University.

DJ Patil

DJ Patil, along with Mr. Thomas..Davenport has authored the famous HBR article titled Data Scientist: The Sexiest Job of the 21st Century”. Presently, he is employed as the US Chief Data Scientist at the White House Office of the Science and Technology Policy. Earlier, he served as a VP of the RelateIQ and the Head of Data Products and as the Chief Scientist at Linkedin. There have been a large number of patents been filed in his name. He had been elected as the Young Global Leader in 2014 by the World Economic Forum. DJ Patil has a Ph.D. in the area of applied mathematics from the University of Maryland.

Jeremy Achin

Jeremy Achin is the Co-founder of the company Data Robot. Before Data Robot, he had worked for 5 years as a Director of the Research and Modeling department at Travelers Insurance. He has performed outstandingly in the Kaggle Competitions. He had managed to secure a rank in the top 10 percent of the participants in all of the competitions in which he had participated.  He has an interest in the areas of Data Mining, Predictive Modeling, Machine Learning etc.

Thus reading and knowing about these top 8 influential people in the field of data science, definitely motivates an individual to pursue data science as a career.
